I had more fun with her than I did during all my young years. It was kid fun but also adult fun, as she was so sophisticated. If I had a bit older mind, I would be with her today. That’s life. Finding out what to do when it is too late. Of course I was only nine years old and she was only 13. But we knew we had found our soul mate. She explained the concept to me and I agreed, to this day. She was my soul mate. We just found each other way to early, especially for me. I was never truly happy after we parted and developed clinical depression. I’m sure, now I was because we parted, though I didn’t realise it then. Enough sniffling.
I remember the time she fed the lion by hand. We had been going, everyday to the zoo at Chapultepec park and feeding the animals, specially the lion. We stayed at the lion cage a long time, every day, and talked to the lion and she always brought a steak for it. It seemed to be hours that we talk to it. It was against the zoo rules to feed the animals, but we did it anyway, slyly. We were about 10 feet from the cage and she would run up and put the meat through the bars. The lion at first ran over and grabbed the meat but later it would be at the bars. Waiting for us, probably. The zoo keeper hated us and we would curse him out. We saw him abuse some animals, so we throw rocks at him if we caught him. Anyway, this one day the lion was across the cage and when she ducked under the guard rail he just walks over nicely and she waited for him and put her hand throw the bars so he could get the meat before it fell to the cage floor. He took the meat gingerly, as if he didn’t want to bite her hand, All the time she was talking to it and it seemed to pure and deep sounding pure or low growl. Then he did the most amazing thing. He put his body hard against the bars so she could pet him. And she did. She stayed there for too long and the darn zoo keeper came screaming. The lion roared and raised up on the bars. It wanted to kill that keeper. We took off after throwing rocks at him and cursing each other out. We sometimes made plans to ambush him and beat him so bad he would not be able to work. But we never did it. Too bad!
We loved being together as there never was anything one of us came up with to do that the other didn’t want to do, too. Like I said, we were soul mates. We use to go to the castle and sit in the emperors couch and pretend we ruled Mexico. We were friends with the guard and we even helped polish the coaches. The guard would tell us stories about the revolution and how President Cardenas was such a great general and when the castle was the living home of the presidents, Cardenas moved out and had it turned into a museum. He told us about some famous battles that General Cardenas fought. When he found out we were friends, he was so pleased he hugged us, as he thought of him as a sort of god, come to same Mexico. I think he was, too He took away the oil companies from the greedy American oil companies and nationalized them. He was the ex-president that I became friends with when he caught me swimming in his pool. I had permission to go swim any time I wanted. He was such a nice man. I took my girlfriend over there and introduced him to her. To my amazement, he knew of her, because he knew her father as an American diplomat. He treated her like a queen and told her, jokingly, to be careful around me because I was a little devil. She told him she already knew that and always kept a sharp eye on me. We all laughed and he had lunch served for us. He was my surrogate father, even though I saw him only a few times, because he was always gone, it seemed, on national business. If people knew he was relaxing with us, they would have gone green with jealousy.
She was always recognised when we went to upscale restaurants and expensive stores. Everyone treated her like a queen, and she was right at home conversing in English, Spanish or French. I was always out of my realm, but she acted like I was King and always held on to my arm to show we were close.
One time she took me to a clothing store and the man measured me all over. I didn’t know why. I thought she was just having fun. The next end of the week, we went back there and he dressed me from hat to shoes and a dark suit, shirt and tie. Can you imagine a nine-year old boy, a little big for his age, all dressed up? Hat and shoes that shined like a mirror? Then we went to a stage show and sat in the third row, end seat. I didn’t realise that this was the best seats. It was a wonderful show, with singers, dancers, tumbling and comedy acts. All in English. It was all a birthday present for me on my 9th birthday. Funny, I forgot all about that night, but now it is like it was yesterday. That was the best present I ever had in all my many years.
I hope she sees this and is reminded of how much we loved each other, all those long years ago.
